mcg to mg converter

1 mg = 1,000 mcg, so divide micrograms by 1,000 to get milligrams: 250 mcg = 0.25 mg, and 0.5 mg = 500 mcg. A microgram (mcg, also written µg) is one thousandth of a milligram. Use the converter below for any value, or the table for common amounts from 50 mcg to 10 mg.

mcg ⇄ mg converter

Works both ways

250 mcg ÷ 1,000 = 0.25 mg

mg = mcg ÷ 1,000
mcg = mg × 1,000

Mistakes to avoid

  • Moving the decimal the wrong way. mcg → mg makes the number smaller (three places left). mg → mcg makes it bigger.
  • Reading "mcg" as "mg". Labels and notes often abbreviate; check every unit when copying a figure.
  • Confusing mass with volume. mcg and mg measure mass. Milliliters and syringe units measure volume. Converting between mass and volume needs a concentration; use the mg to units converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert mcg to mg?

Divide by 1,000. 250 mcg ÷ 1,000 = 0.25 mg. To go the other way, multiply mg by 1,000: 0.5 mg × 1,000 = 500 mcg.

Is 1,000 mcg the same as 1 mg?

Yes. The prefix micro- means one millionth and milli- means one thousandth, so one milligram contains exactly 1,000 micrograms.

Is mcg the same as µg?

Yes. µg is the SI symbol for microgram; mcg is the abbreviation used in pharmacy and on many labels because a handwritten µ can be misread as m.

How many mcg are in a 5 mg vial?

5 mg × 1,000 = 5,000 mcg. A 10 mg vial holds 10,000 mcg.

Why do some protocols use mcg and labels use mg?

Vials are labeled by total content, which is usually several milligrams. Individual amounts of small peptides are often fractions of a milligram, which is easier to write as a whole number of micrograms. Mixing the two is the classic 1,000-fold error.
